Samsung, a well-known smartphone manufacturer, is set to release its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and it is highly anticipated by tech enthusiasts worldwide. Samsung’s battery manufacturing division is exploring a new battery stacking technique inspired by the electric vehicle (EV) industry to enhance the energy density of small batteries for various consumer electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. This new technique involves tightly arranging battery components, such as cathodes and anodes, to achieve higher energy density.

According to recent reports, Samsung’s SDI division, responsible for developing and producing Li-Ion batteries, is partnering with two Chinese firms to implement this stacking method for producing Gen 5 batteries intended for electric vehicles. This technique is predicted to improve energy density by more than 10% compared to the traditional winding method, where battery materials are rolled into jelly rolls and placed in cans.
